SSR Training for Peace Support Operations Training Centres (forthcoming)

The international community, through the UN and other multilateral fora, continue to highlight the increasingly important role that the reform of security and justice institutions play in preventing conflict and building peace. A key challenge facing the international community is the need to build capacity, knowledge and awareness of SSR amongst those working in Peace Support Operations environments. This includes not only development actors, but also military and police personnel who are increasingly engaged in ‘reform and re-structuring mandates’, as well as political and diplomatic personnel.

In partnership with UNITAR, ISSAT is working on a training package which will help integrate SSR into PSO training at peacekeeping training centres, initially in Africa, but extending, in due course, to other centres. The training package will focus on a training of trainers’ methodology leading to the building of sustainable regional SSR capacity.

The course will help participants to:

  • discuss the principles of adult education;
  • describe the major elements of training basics;
  • define major issues covered by SSR;
  • discuss challenges and opportunities for training in SSR;
  • apply skills to facilitate a range of interactive methodologies used to teach SSR;
  • identify basic steps for planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating a SSR training programmes.
