The need for experienced SSR practitioners is rising, and this trend will continue. However, face-to-face trainings are far fewer and unable to meet the growing demand. The additional challenge is to find the resources, in terms of time and money, to attend the physical trainings. With these e-learning course, it is now possible to meet the demands of a wider community of SSR practitioners in the international community, and share with them the principles, concepts, contexts and components of SSR, using existing and emerging knowledge, experience and international SSR policy framework.

Our first e-learning course, Introduction to Security Sector Reform , was developed with UNITAR in 2011 and is currently hosted on their website. The link below will redirect you to their site.

Later this year, we will be launching our next e-learning course on Advising on Security Sector Reform.

Target Audience

This course has been developed in partnership with UNITAR, and is the first course available online on the subject of SSR. Adapted from ISSAT’s Level 1 Basic Course, it comes with the added benefit of a UNITAR certification.

While the e-learning course cannot substitute face-to-face trainings, it certainly provides an opportunity for those who don’t have such access to to familiarise themselves with the subject until such time when they can attend one. The e-learning course can be done individually, at any time, and is modular, so it can be done one section at a time over a maximum three month period. Including assessments, it takes three hours to complete the course online.

The benefit of the e-learning platform also enables us to create virtual classrooms for your designated groups of participants. For instance, if you wish us to create a virtual classroom for twenty course participants, it would be possible for us to do so and facilitate the course virtually from ISSAT. Virtual classrooms have the added advantage of facilitating interaction between the designated group participants.

Being an accredited course, it not just helps in building knowledge, but provides the participant with a competitive edge in the professional sphere; participants need to score eighty percent to obtain their course completion certificate. With the aim of building capacity and knowledge on the subject of SSR, ISSAT is offering this product free of cost.

For further queries on the e-learning, please free to get in touch with us at elearning@issat.dcaf.ch. For group registrations, email us and we will set up the virtual classrooms for you.
