International Police Advisors Masterclass

The programme will be run from 29th October to 9th November 2018. The aim is to enhance participants’ effectiveness in the role of senior strategic police advisor to international police reform initiatives, through exposure to experienced actors in the field of police reform or security sector reform. The Masterclass programme uses case study methodology to enable participants to consider alternative perspectives in a variety of international police settings. The Masterclass also lays the foundation for active participation in a peer group community of practice that will help develop the field and offer a continuing source of professional support.

In addition, DCAF ISSAT will attend the Police Master class executive board meeting in Scotland on 9 November 2018 to review the future development of the Police Masteclass.

Advanced Training Course on Security Sector Reform (SSR) (UK - 77 Brigade)

The 77th Brigade UK Army has conducted an “Advanced Training on Security Sector Reform (SSR)” from 25-29 June 2018 at the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham.

This five-day intensive residential course has been carried out in collaboration with the International Security Sector Advisory Team of the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF/ ISSAT).

This advanced training was aimed at those who are just about to be deployed in support of a bilateral, regional or multilateral mission to support security sector reform programmes. More specifically, the course targets senior practitioners and professionals – including civilian, military and police personnel, as well as civil society representatives and professionals from the private sector – who are working closely on issues related to SSR such as governance, rule of law, police reform, defence reform, justice reform disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration etc. The course also targets those involved in programming, programme management, mission conduct and planning and/or in political/ policy dialogue. The organisers intend to select a highly diverse group of participants in terms of professional and organisational background, age and nationality, as well as with regards to gender balance.

ISSAT support to Zimbabwe Security & Justice Scoping Mission

ISSAT was requested to provide a Security and Justice Advisor to integrate the UK Stabilisation Unit team carrying out an initial scoping of the Zimbabwean justice and security sector to assess the potential viability of UK provision of support to this area.
