Advanced Training Course on Security Sector Reform (SSR) - 77th Brigade, UK

The 77th Brigade (UK Army) will conduct an “Advanced Training on Security Sector Reform (SSR)” from 25 January until 1 March 2019 at the UK Defence Training Centre in Hermitage.

This five-day intensive residential course will be carried out in collaboration with the International Security Sector Advisory Team of the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF/ ISSAT).

The course will aim to enhance the practical skills, capacity and strategic thinking of participants on SSR principles through the sharing of views and experiences in SSR trends and practice. It will highlight issues such as the principles and characteristics of SSR, enhancing governance and oversight of security and justice institutions, the linkages between justice and police reform and the development of national security strategies. The course also develops soft skills and will focus on the role of a SSR advisor. Focusing on practical exercises, case studies and role plays, this intensive course helps participants understand the challenges relating to SSR and helps elaborate possible solutions to common roadblocks.

Target Audience

The course is targeted to mid to senior level practitioners and officials directly involved in SSR activities.
