The Federal Ministry of Defence assists the Minister in fulfilling his many and varied responsibilities. It consists of the executive group, the civilian directorates and the military staffs. The Ministry performs the specific functions of the technical department for military defence, centering its efforts on planning and politico-military matters, the supreme command, the supreme authority for Bundeswehr administration including the armaments organization with a focus on procurement for the armed forces.

The Federal Foreign Office represents Germany’s interests to the world. It promotes international exchange and offers protection and assistance to Germans abroad. With headquarters in Berlin and a network of 229 missions abroad, the Federal Foreign Office maintains Germany’s relations with other countries as well as with international and supra-national organizations.

The Ministry of Defence protects the French territory, population and interests. It also responds to other missions in the framework of international agreements or treaties (NATO) or their regional counterparts (European defense). These are based on humanitarian, environmental and security criteria (the fight against piracy and terrorism). Beyond these tasks, in the name of maintaining peace and national cohesion, the Ministry of Defense is increasingly involved in public service missions. Its human and material resources are deployed on a daily basis to support or supplement the activities of other ministries both nationally and — in emergency situations — internationally

As one of the Ministries of the Finnish Government and leading authority in the area of national defence, the Ministry of Defence is in charge of national defence policy and national security as well as of international cooperation in defence policy matters.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs promotes the security and welfare of Finland and the Finns, and works for a secure and fair world. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs concentrates on foreign and security policy, trade policy and development policy as well as on significant foreign policy issues and international relations in general. The Ministry also assists other branches of government in the coordination of international affairs.

In general, the functions of the Ministry include making proposals for planning national defence politics, implementing the planned activities, and the organisation of national defence, which comprises the following:

•  to determine the overall guidelines for national defence;
•  to organise international co-operation in the sphere of national defence;
•  to arrange the preparation and implementation of mobilisation;
•  to implement the subsequent record management and training of reservists;
•  to arrange and finance the activities of the Defence Forces and the Defence League;
•  to develop the defence industry;
•  to supervise the activities of the Defence Forces and the Defence League
•  to draft subsequent legislation.

 The Ministry’s area of responsibility includes the Defence Forces; the Defence Resources Agency, which organises recruitment and conscription issues; the Information Board; the educational institutions of the Defence Forces; the Estonian War Museum - General Laidoner Museum , which showcases military history; and Seli Health Centre, which provides rehabilitation services to military personnel. The authority of the Minister includes supervision over all the divisions and offices for the purposes of lawfulness and expedience.
