Canadian International Development Agency

CIDA is Canada's lead agency for development assistance. CIDA's aim is to:

  • Manage Canada's support and resources effectively and accountably to achieve meaningful, sustainable results
  • Engage in policy development in Canada and internationally, enabling Canada's effort to realize its development objectives.

Canadian Department of National Defence

The fundamental goal of the Department of Nnational Defense and the Canadian Forces is to protect Canada, and Canadian interests and values, while contributing to international peace and security.

The CF defends Canada by:

  • protecting Canadian territory, airspace and maritime areas of jurisdiction;
  • helping civil authorities protect and sustain national interests;
  • helping civil authorities in national emergencies; and
  • helping civil authorities maintain an adequate, reasonably uniform level of emergency preparedness across the country.

The CF contributes to the defence of North America by:

  • protecting the Canadian approaches to the continent in partnership with the armed forces of the United States;
  • promoting Arctic security; and
  • pursuing opportunities for Canada-U.S. defence co-operation in other areas.

The CF contributes to international security by:

  • participating in multilateral operations through international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and through coalitions of like-minded countries;
  • supporting humanitarian-relief efforts and helping to restore conflict-devastated areas; and
  • participating in confidence-building measures such as arms-control programs.

Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade

The mandate of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada is to manage Canada's diplomatic and consular relations and to encourage the country's international trade. This includes:

  • ensuring that Canada's foreign policy reflects true Canadian values and advances Canada's national interests;
  • strengthening rules-based trading arrangements and expanding free and fair market access at bilateral, regional and global levels; and
  • working with a range of partners inside and outside government to achieve increased economic opportunity and enhanced security for Canada and for Canadians at home and abroad.

Our Priorities: 2010-2011

The Department's priorities include bringing greater economic opportunity for Canada, building on a comprehensive strategy for relations with the Americas as well as a global strategy for relations with the United States, asserting Canadian leadership in emerging global governance, Afghanistan and transforming the department.

Austria conducts bilateral development cooperation with partner countries and provides multilateral assistance together with international organisations. Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) also collaborates with non-governmental organisations that implement programmes and projects in the partner countries and contribute to developmental education at home. ADC also works with private sector and industry as another major partner.

The following priorities top the Austrian foreign policy agenda:

Within the European Union Austria is committed to strengthening the EU’s role as a successful international player and therefore supports all steps directed at deepening the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), promoting external relations and developing the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP).

Regional Priorities include:

  • intensifying neighbourhood policies
  • the Western Balkans, where Austria supports the implementation of the countries’ European perspective in line with the individual progress made,
  • the New Neighbours of the enlarged European Union,
  • the Strategic Partnership with the Russian Federation and
  • supporting all initiatives aimed at creating peace, stability and wealth in the Mediterranean region and in the neighbouring countries of the Near and Middle East.

Thematic Priorities include:

  • trans-Atlantic relations based on the common values and economic ties,
  • strengthening the authority and the structures of the United Nations,
  • making full use of the instruments provided by the OSCE and the Council of Europe,
  • respect for international law, particularly with a view to universal respect for human rights and the rights of minorities,
  • non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the strengthening of the relevant organisations and control regimes (IAEA, OPCW, CTBTO; HCOC) as well as the ban of land mines and cluster munitions and the containment of small and light weapons
  • combating international terrorism, and
  • the Dialogue among Civilisations.

Swedepeace

The establishment of Swedepeace Foundation aims at strengthening and improving the effectiveness of Swedish and international peace and security initiatives in countries affected by armed violence or instability. The Foundation will strive to achieve its purpose by focusing on the interface and linkages between theory, policy and practice, which will help identify options for action and promote results-oriented cooperation for peace and security.

Austrian Armed Forces

The primary objective of the Austrian Armed Forces is the military defence of Austria. This is conducted on the principles of a militia system. Other tasks include defending constitutional institutions, preserving law and order and providing humanitarian aid in case of natural catastrophes. Because of Austria's membership in the United Nations, the European Union and the Partnership for Peace (PfP) Program, foreign assignments have notably increased in importance.
