OIF

The International Organisation of La Francophonie represents one of the biggest linguistic zones in the world. Its members share more than just a common language. They also share the humanist values promoted by the French language. The French language and its humanist values represent the two cornerstones on which the International Organisation of La Francophonie is based.

The International Organisation of La Francophonie was created in 1970. Its mission is to embody the active solidarity between its 75 member states and governments (56 members and 19 observers), which together represent over one-third of the United Nations’ member states and account for a population of over 890 million people, including 220 million French speakers.

Mano River Women's Peace Network

The Mano River Women's Peace Network (MARWOPNET) is an NGO with headquarters in Freetown, Sierra Leone, that promotes peace and development in the Mano River region (Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea). MARWOPNET was formed under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in May 2000, when a group of women leaders from local NGOs met in Abuja, Nigeria, to promote their participation in the process of restoring peace in Africa, and specifically in the Mano River region. MARWOPNET, whose formation marked the culmination of efforts facilitated largely by Femmes Afrique Solidarité (FAS), an NGO based in Switzerland, is comprised of roughly 30 umbrella organizations.

It is a primary example of an NGO that has been actively engaged in both the informal, traditional, grass-roots sphere of conflict resolution, and at the highest levels of government. It has sent representatives on peace tours around the region, participated in over 20 international conferences and summits pertaining to peace and other humanitarian issues, advanced direct political action by state leaders, and participated in the formal peace negotiations that ended Liberia's civil war in 2003.

Group for Research and Information on Peace and Security

Created in Brussels in 1979, GRIP (Groupe de recherche et d’information sur la paix et la sécurité) developed in a particular context, that of the Cold War. At that time, our first research work tackled the balance of power resulting from the East-West confrontation and, throughout the 1980s, GRIP became well-known for the accuracy of its analyses and reports dealing with the arms race, its mechanisms, the interests at stake, etc.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the geo-strategic perspective has changed considerably and so have GRIP’s research interests. Since then, GRIP has tackled security issues in the broad sense, studying things like the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts, mostly in developing countries (particularly in Africa). Two of the many aspects in which GRIP specialises are the proliferation of light weapons and the control of the arms trade. Less traditional themes are also given close attention, like “green” conflicts, the role of the media and science, globalisation and humanitarian action, to cite some of the most recent.

GRIP is still studying the role of the European Union in the fields of defence and security as well as arms production, military doctrines and programmes, and the evolution of international organisations (UN, OSCE and NATO). In 1990, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Perez de Cuéllar, designated GRIP as a “Peace Messenger” in recognition of its “precious contribution to the action towards peace”.

BEFORE

BEFORE helps prevent the devastation of violent conflict in fragile states. Unlike any other conflict prevention work, BEFORE links political early warning signs with a quick, independent, flexible and holistic response. Built upon and focused on partnerships, we connect local stakeholders and international or transnational organizations with the purpose of looking at potential wars from every angle. As a bridge between northern and southern actors, we catalyze stalled action to prevent potential violent conflict. BEFORE reframes the way we all think about war by offering each one of us the chance to stop it– before it’s too late.
