Female Chief Ending child marriage in Malawi

Malawi's Chief Theresa Kachindamoto has broken up over 850 child marriages in the past three years, sent the girls back to school, and banned the sexual initiations of girls. UN Women supports traditional leaders in Malawi to ensure that the recent changes in marital law are fully understood and implemented.

United Nations peacekeepers have been deployed for more than seven decades. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the landmark Security Council resolution which put protection of civilians at the heart of UN Peacekeeping. Today, more than 95% of our peacekeepers have a mandate to protect civilians. These peacekeepers put themselves in harm’s way to protect civilians from violence every day.
