12 June - 14 June 2018 · Ottawa

This three-day intensive residential course comprised a combination of practical, hands-on exercises and expert facilitated discussions based around the framework of our established and successful advanced SSR programme. The course aimed to enhance the understanding, skills, competency and strategic thinking of participants on SSR principles through the sharing and challenging of views and experiences in SSR trends, practice and complexity. It highlighted issues such as the principles and characteristics of SSR, enhancing governance and oversight of security and justice institutions, the linkages between justice and police reform and the development of national security strategies and examine the cross-sector civilian, uniformed, State and non-State roles within SSR as well as SSR implications for wider security, justice and development engagement.

Throughout the course, key learning took place between participants who were encouraged to engage in the collective sharing of their own experience and reflections on specific topics and context. Participants were exposed to many of the tools and techniques used by SSR practitioners on the ground. Focusing on practical exercises and case studies, it was an intensive course which helped participants gain confidence and knowledge in better understanding today’s SSR context and to help elaborate possible solutions to common roadblocks in policy, implementation and even learning.
