Welcome to this introductory course on effective advising. This course is aimed at those currently involved in—or who plan to get involved in — an advisory function abroad. The course is also relevant to professionals at Headquarters and in the field, who work with — or who will deal with — advisors.
This course is designed to be informative and practical. It proposes concrete steps on how to carry out effective advising. These proposals are based on the lessons identified, and good practices gathered, from a range of advisors with diverse experience. They should be viewed as options for consideration on a case-by-case basis, and should in no way be interpreted as mandatory or prescriptive.
You will need approximately between 3-5 hours to complete this course. This course is divided into four main lessons: the role of an advisor; working with local actors; assessing existing capacity; and functioning in a complex environment. Each lesson will have specific learning objectives that will be outlined at the beginning of the lesson. In addition, you will also have access to additional resources throughout this course.
