Responsibility to Protect (R2P) training course

Policy makers of governments in Africa in security. Military, police and civilian peacekeepers. Non-Governmental Organisations. Representatives from the Regional (AU) or Sub-Regional Economic Communities (RECs). Representatives from the National Peace Councils. Civil Society Organisations. Officials of the Ministries of Interior, Foreign Affairs and Justice.

The concept of Responsibility to Protect (R2P) was initiated at the UN in 2005, leaning on the work provided by the Canadian-led initiative of the International Commission on Intervention and State Security (ICISS).   Clarification of the concept has been difficult and its application vexatious as well as disastrous. To contribute to the ongoing dialogue on the need to clarify the concept and also fill the gap in knowledge and information, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) is scheduled to run a two-week course to provide the necessary professional training, requisite knowledge as well as the basic information on the concept of R2P.

Inspiring African Women Leadership In Peace And Security

The programme is targeted at middle level women in Peace and Security. Based on the core principles of the WPS agenda which are Participation, Protection and Prevention, beneficiaries will broadly fall into the following groups: Participation: Women in PSO, mediation and negotiation, government etc. Protection: Women in Security Agencies and Government Prevention: Women in Civil Society Organisations, Community Based Organisations, Government etc.

Le rôle de la police des Nations Unies dans les opérations de maintien de la paix

Le cours couvre l’histoire de la police des Nations Unies et propose un aperçu de la structure et des liens hiérarchiques de la Division de la police des Nations Unies et d’une opération de paix typique. Certains chapitres exposent les quatre piliers essentiels du Cadre stratégique d’orientation : opérations, commandement et contrôle, administration et renforcement des capacités. Le cours étudie également les efforts entrepris au sein de la police des Nations Unies en matière d’égalité des sexes, les besoins spécifiques des femmes et des enfants en termes de sécurité, les considérations d’ordre culturel, le rôle de la police des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre les violences sexuelles et sexistes et dans la lutte contre la criminalité grave et organisée ainsi que les partenariats mis en place avec d’autres institutions étatiques, régionales et internationales chargées de garantir l'État de droit.

Course on Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR)

The participants are expected to have an intermediate knowledge of peacebuilding mechanisms and/or structures, dynamics of internal armed conflicts, and a need or strong interest to learn about DDR. Invited participants are civil servants, diplomats, police, military personnel, academics and representatives from international and non-governmental organizations.

04 to 15/11/2019

In this ten-day course, the participants will explore the concept of DDR and gain a deep understanding of its role within the international peacebuilding architecture. Furthermore, the course will cover a number of DDR-related tools and tangent thematic areas. The course will cover nine thematic areas:

  • Introduction to DDR
  • DDR planning in practice
  • Security issues in DDR
  • Transition processes
  • Social issues in DDR
  • Political issues in DDR
  • Economic issues in DDR
  • DDR and political processes
  • A differentiated approach to DDR
