One Year Full-Time/Two Years Part-Time
Master of Science (MSc) Leadership and Development is covered over one year for full-time study and over two years for part-time study. This programme enables students to develop and demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in the following:
- Concepts, principles and theories of leadership from a multi-disciplinary perspective;
- Ethical issues in leadership research;
- Principles of research design and methodology in leadership research;
- Quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis;
- Independent research and debates across disciplines such as social-psychology, sociology, development and security studies.
The programme explores several thematic issues including: the complexity of leadership; leadership in socio-economic transitions historically and in recent times; and the impact of global leadership on development processes in developing societies. Crucial to the success of this programme is:
- An understanding of the concept of leadership and its application in different contexts and at different levels of analysis with a focus on developing societies
- Ability to analyze the relationship between leadership and development outcomes
- Ability to connect formal knowledge (i.e. well-developed concepts, theories and scientific-based observations) with their lived experiencesparticularly as this relates to human development
- Ability to undertake research on leadership and development processes and present findings in a professional manner
- Ability to engage with key audiences using outcomes of research to influence leadership decisions
- Achievement of transferrable skills and competence which will equip the student for a career for engagement or to undertake research at a higher degree
