Sample Lesson Plans for Teaching Gender to the Military

Three lesson plans for teaching gender to the military developed by experts on military education, gender training for the military and integrating gender in military operations developed at the 17th meeting of the Security Sector Reform Working Group of the Partnership for Peace Consortium, hosted in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from 12 to 14 December 2012 in collaboration with the Education Development Working Group and the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies.

This resource can be used when teaching gender to the military at one of the following three levels:

(1) Applying gender at a Tactical Level

Audience: Infantry group (approx. twelve to fifteen soldiers plus one group commander and one deputy group commander)

(2) Integrating Gender Perspective into Operations

Audience: NATO Senior Officers (Combined-Joint) (COL and above)

(3) Why & How to Include Gender In Operational Planning Staff Work

Audience: Majors to Lieutenant Colonels, Staff College (national officers), Defence Academy Level

This resource provides sample lesson plans that should be adapted and elaborated upon so that they are appropriate to the target audience.

These lesson plans draw on the expertise of experts in the fields of education, gender and military affairs.

The lesson plans are primarily designed for a NATO / PfP audience, but could easily be adapted to other contexts.

These lesson plans were developed at a workshop entitled "Designing Sample Gender Lessons - Second PFPC Workshop on Teaching Gender to the Military".
